Charles L. Mungin, affectionately known as “Bobby”, was born on August 30, 1944, in Pineland, South Carolina, the beloved son of the late James Benjamin Mungin and Dora Allen. With a generous heart, often giving the shirt off his back, Bobby touched countless lives with his kindness and spirited nature. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend; cherished by all.
Charles was raised on his grandparent’s farm in Pinelands, SC until he was 8 years old; he then joined his parents in New York. Charles grew up in Harlem, NY. As a youth, he loved playing basketball, bike riding, and dancing, often competing in neighborhood dance contests. He graduated from Charles Evan Hughes High School in NY and married his first wife Marie Spanish. Shortly after, he joined the U.S. Army, proudly serving in the 101st Airborne division, 502nd infantry regiment, known as the 50-deuce, and survived combat in Vietnam. After his honorable discharge, Charles worked 33 years at Frederick Atkins, a Buying Office in Times Square, holding various roles including manager of setting up and dismantling merchandise for stores all over the country, supervisor of shipping and receiving, and facilities manager.
A fun-loving and sociable man with a great sense of humor, he enjoyed oldies music, playing cards, dominoes, bowling, driving and road trips with his grandchildren. He had a mass collection of oldies, photos, DVD’s and movies. Bobby also volunteered for many years at the Bronx Vet Center for Post Traumatic and Stress Disorder Groups, and helping Veterans secure their benefits. Upon retirement, Bobby relocated to South New Jersey, where he married his beloved wife Gloria Mungin, sharing 18 years of marriage. Together they hosted memorable backyard barbecues, traveled and enjoyed cruises. Charles was an active member of the Cranberry Creek Veteran’s Club.
Charles was preceded in death by his brothers James B. Mungin, and Robert Lee Mungin. He leaves to mourn his loving wife, Gloria Mungin, sister, Kathy Mungin, Aunt Julia Holman, daughters Rena Mungin Capers, Danielle Noble, DeShawn Mungin and Tarji Cook; sons Daniel Noble and Talib A. Shakur; Gloria’s children from a previous marriage sons Kenyatta Galbreth, and Rafiq Small, daughter Naeemah Small; and 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 2 nephews, Harry Sutton and Amin Mungin, 2 nieces, Nikki Dyer and Mena Velez, 3 great grand nephews, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Charles “Bobby” Mungin will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
