Esther Hughes

Esther Hughes, 79 of Little Egg Harbor, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 13, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was a caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her family. She spent many hours with family and friends on Long Beach Island, one of her favorite places.

Esther was born in the Bronx, NY and graduated from Cathedral High School. Shortly after graduation, she and Jim, who was serving in the US Army at the time, were married, started their family and moved to Metuchen, NJ where they raised their 3 children. After she retired from the US Post Office, they moved to Long Beach Island and then to Little Egg Harbor. She was a devout Catholic and most recently a communicant of St. Theresa's Church. She enjoyed playing Dominoes and card games with her 7 grandchildren and friends, was a champion Mahjong player and enjoyed listening to her Irish music. She was an active member of the Sunrise Bay Women's Club where she enjoyed her weekly games with the ladies, attended many events with the Red Hats and was a volunteer at the St. Theresa's Food Pantry.

Esther is pre-deceased by her beloved daughter Eileen Hughes, her parents Thomas and Catherine Quinn, brother Bobby Quinn and sisters Patsy Jansen and Catherine Ryan.

She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years James Hughes, son Dennis and his wife Diane of Doylestown, PA, daughter Theresa and her husband Bill of Jamison, PA, grandchildren Kyle, Connor and Will Everett and Kelly, Tim, Matt and Lauren Hughes, sister Rosemary Morris and brothers Tom and Jim Quinn.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 21st from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM and on Monday, May 22nd from 8:30-9:30 AM at Maxwell Funeral Home (609-296-6060) located at 160 Mathistown Road in Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Monday, May 22, 2017 at St. Theresa's Church located at 450 Radio Road in Little Egg Harbor followed by a burial ceremony at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway, NJ.
