Thomas Joseph Cullen, 84, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Tom was the son of Thomas and Nora Cullen. He spent his early years in Newark and East Orange, New Jersey, and attended Our Lady of the Valley High School in Orange. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Tom began his professional journey as a junior accountant with the American Stock Exchange in New York City in 1961, but soon discovered his true passion in sales. In January 1966, he joined the NCR Corporation as a sales trainee in Newark, NJ. After completing his training, which included two weeks at NCR’s renowned Sugar Camp where he was elected President of his graduating class, he was promoted to Account Manager and began selling NCR banking products throughout Hudson County.
In 1978, Tom was transferred to the New York office, where he helped introduce NCR’s branch automation systems and some of the first ATMs to major banks in New York City. In 1982, he joined the Diebold Corporation as Director of Major Accounts, where he oversaw sales of banking security systems and ATMs. He returned to NCR in 1986 as District Manager and later took early retirement in December 1993. He concluded his career as Vice President of GCS Computers Inc. in Manhattan, where he sold computers and networking systems until his retirement in 2002.
A lifelong learner, Tom had a deep interest in biographies, history, and quantum physics. He authored two books: The Life and Times of Thomas J. Cullen and The Next Cullen Generation. His passion for family history led him to spend countless hours researching his ancestry at the Scranton Public Library and local cemeteries. In 1985, he organized a family reunion in Scranton that brought together nearly 100 relatives.
Tom was also an accomplished athlete who loved baseball, softball, basketball, and golf. He achieved two hole-in-ones during his lifetime and, at age 42, pitched a no-hitter against a town all-star Babe Ruth team. He continued playing basketball and softball well into his 40s.
Tom was married for 59 years to the love of his life, Marilyn. Together, they raised their family in Little Falls, NJ, where they lived for 32 years. After their youngest child was married, they moved to Sea Oaks, a senior community in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. There, they quickly became involved in community life. Tom served on several committees and as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees. While they enjoyed traveling in earlier years, they found joy and contentment spending time together in their new community.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife Marilyn and their four children: Thomas and Sandra Cullen of Yardley, PA; Christopher and Kellie Cullen of Wake Forest, NC; Jeffrey and Carol Cullen of Southborough, MA; and Kara Lynn and Timothy Flood of Hoboken, NJ. He was a proud and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren: Sean Thomas, Danielle, Lauren, Katherine, Matthew, Thomas J. (TJ), Lindsey Cullen, and Quinn Thomas and Audrey Flood.
He is also survived by his brother John and wife Kathleen of Ocean, NJ; his sister Cheryl Powers of Fishers, IN; his sister-in-law Maura Cullen of Fishers, IN; and brother-in-law Walter Maziarski of Milford, MA, along with 14 cherished nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother James Cullen of Fishers, IN.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday July 8, 2025 from 3-7p and on Wednesday July 9, 2025 from 930-1030a at Maxwell Funeral Home, 160 Mathistown Rd, Little Egg Harbor, NJ, 08087.
