William A Sooy

Early on the morning of December 25, 2020 William A Sooy passed away due to complications from Covid-19. He was 85 years old.

William was born in Tuckerton, NJ on August 19, 1935 to Martha Sooy and John C Sooy. He was a life long resident of Tuckerton. He built two homes there. He and his wife, Margaret, lived in the second house for 50 years. He designed it when he was still a student at Tuckerton High School, and never tired of improving it. It was big and beautiful, and a design all his own.

Bill graduated from Tuckerton High School in 1952. In 1955 he joined the United States Coast Guard, as did his father and grandfather. He was stationed in Cape May, NJ and served from 1955 to 1959. He also married Margaret V McKandless in 1955 in Paekertown, NJ. Bill and Peg were a great team. Together their individual creativity thrived. They designed and built many things for their home, and many outrageous Halloween costumes.

For many years, Bill was active in the Tuckerton United Methodist Church. He had a deep sonorous voice, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He loved belting out his favorite hymn, How Great Thou Art. Bill also served as president of the Tuckerton Elementary School school board. He was chairman of the Tuckerton Old Home Society, and president of the Southern Regional High School Band Parents Association. For over 30 years he was an employee of Atlantic City Electric Company in Atlantic City, NJ.

Bill was friendly and compassionate. He loved to smile and laugh. When it came to animals, he was tender-hearted. He was never without the companionship of his dogs, grand dogs and even a couple of pet birds. Of all Bill’s activities, the most important to him was being a family man. He was happiest when surrounded by the members of his family. He was a loving, understanding and generous husband, father, uncle, grandfather and father in law. William is survived by his wife, Margaret Sooy, his brother, Clifford Sooy, his daughter, Billee Kaye Nicosia, his son, Nathaniel Sooy and his granddaughter, Abbey Sooy.
